National Immigrant Heritage Month: A Test of Faith and Character

With concerted action, we can make this June’s National Immigrant Heritage Month more than “feel-good” activities and uplifting rhetoric, as valuable as that may be.  We can go further – we can stop even more draconian measures from being enacted by Congress to punish and degrade our immigrant brothers and sisters.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (its true name), now pending before the US Senate and having already passed by the US House, contains a Big Six of particularly cruel provisions, as identified by the Migration and Refugee Services of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.  The Bishops and many others are urging those who care about immigrants to contact their Senators immediately.   Especially important are contacts made by citizens residing in states with Republican Senators. Click here for details about these Big 6 provisions and easy ways to advocate for change.

It would indeed be supreme hypocrisy were our nation to mark National Immigrant Heritage Month with the passage of this bill in June.

As we reflect on the Pentecostal miracle, which has sadly not lasted, when people spoke in many different tongues yet found understanding and harmony, we are reminded of what an extraordinary vision we can strive toward and contemplate during National Immigration Month.

Peace and Blessings,
Tom Dwyer
