Throughout Immigrant Heritage Month, A Faith That Does Justice is sharing stories from members of our community who immigrated to the United States. By creating space for people to tell their own stories in their own words, we hope to foster understanding, challenge misconceptions, and celebrate the experiences, contributions, and resilience of immigrants. Each story reflects one person’s journey. Together, they invite us to see our neighbors more clearly, listen more deeply, and recognize the dignity and humanity that faith calls us to honor in every person.

Where are you from? 

I’m originally from  a small town in Colombia of about 10,000 people, where life is simple, people know each other by name, and community means everything. Growing up there taught me resilience, humility, and the importance of hard work from an early age.
 

What brought you to the United States? How long have you lived here? 

I moved to the United States in 2016 searching for new opportunities, a better future, and the chance to improve my English while building a life through determination and perseverance. Like many immigrants, I arrived carrying dreams, fears, and the hope that sacrifice would eventually open doors.

What would you like to share about your immigration experience and the life you have built here? 

My immigration journey has been filled with both victories and challenges. I have experienced loneliness, homesickness, and moments of feeling like I didn’t fully belong. Missing family, friends, traditions, and the comfort of home is something that never completely disappears. But through every difficult season, I have held onto one personal mantra: No matter how I feel, I wake up, get up, dress up, and never give up. That mindset has carried me through long workdays, cold winters, uncertainty, and moments of self-doubt.

What have you learned from your experience that others should know? 

What I have learned is that discipline, dedication, and a positive spirit can transform even the hardest circumstances into opportunities for growth. Success does not happen overnight. It is built little by little, through long nights, persistence, courage, and the willingness to keep moving forward even when nobody sees the struggle behind the scenes.

What role has your faith played in your experience? 

Faith has also played an important role in my journey. It has reminded me that every challenge has purpose and that kindness matters. My experience has taught me the importance of supporting others, especially those who are still trying to find their path. I believe there is always a way to give back, encourage someone else, and help people feel seen and supported during difficult moments in life.

Today, I carry both my Colombian roots and my American journey with pride. They have shaped me into someone stronger, more compassionate, and deeply grateful for every opportunity I have earned along the way.
