We are devastated by this tragedy. Father Peter was a beacon of light, hope, and inspiration. He leaves a long legacy of inspiring faith in action and speaking truth to power. Our lives and the lives of the countless individuals he has served have all been bettered by his involvement in them. He was a beautiful, gentle soul whose life positively impacted so many.
Father Peter entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) after he was inspired by his experience in El Salvador in the 1980s. El Salvador was then in the midst of a 10-year civil war that resulted from years of systematic and violent repression of its citizens by a military-backed government that eventually claimed the lives of 70,000 people. As a physician, he offered health care in some of its marginal communities and conflict zones to people who had been abandoned by their government. This work emboldened him to leave behind his life of privilege and a promising career as a physician to enter a world of human suffering where so many people die before their time. Father Peter founded A Faith That Does Justice in 2015 to offer to others the experience of self-transformation and transcendence that comes from living beyond oneself and on behalf of others.
We will continue to carry out his legacy and life’s work in A Faith That Does Justice’s mission to help people live their faith intentionally in service of others. In the coming weeks, the Board of Directors of A Faith That Does Justice will conduct a search for a new Executive Director, overseeing day-to-day operations and ensuring that we continue to meet the needs of those we serve. Our programming will continue without disruption. Our top priority is that the people we serve continue to receive our support. Our volunteers are committed to our mission and remain steadfast in their dedication to this work.
Those who were privileged to know (walk with) Fr Peter, truly walked with Jesus on the road to Emmeus. May it please our Father to send another to carry on The Walk!
We only met Fr. Gyves once, while we attended Mass at St. Cecilia while visiting Boston this past Summer, and were touched by his homily and the mission of his “A Faith that does Justice” organization. I just learned more about his very impressive and inspiring life while reading his Bio and this info about his passing. What a wonderful and inspiring story. May he be rewarded with eternal life and peaceful rest with the Lord. May his legacy continue for generations to come.
