Peter W. Gyves Memorial Fund

The Board of Directors of A Faith That Does Justice has established the Peter Gyves, SJ MD, Memorial Fund to continue the legacy of its founder, Fr. Peter. To honor his deep commitment to improving the well-being of immigrants and their potential to contribute to society, the Board has chosen to the dedicate this fund to strengthening and expanding our program of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). The fund supports two new initiatives: payment of stipends to help recruit and retain ESOL teachers who make a significant commitment of time to prepare and teach classes, and stipends for graduates of the ESOL program to serve as mentors to current ESOL students. These mentors will help students overcome obstacles to success and thus help to increase retention; at the same time, it will enable AFTDJ to better represent those whom we serve and to sustain a connection with graduates. Beyond these two initiatives, funds will be directed to select programmatic needs. In the process, we will expand and diversify our AFTDJ community, benefiting students, mentors and volunteers alike.
